Electrical and Solar PV Inspections for Appalachian Power Service in Charleston, WV

Appalachian Power will not serve a new service or energize a solar system until a third-party electrical inspection is on file. Atlas Electric is a locally owned electrical contractor with Master Electricians and Licensed Electrical Inspectors, and we perform those inspections for electrical contractors, solar installers and homeowners across Kanawha and Putnam counties.

Most inspections happen the same day. If not, we are usually there within 1 to 2 days.

Inspections for Appalachian Power service and solar interconnection

Appalachian Power, an AEP company, requires a third-party inspection under the WV Electrical Inspection Program before it connects a job. We inspect the work, then file the results with Appalachian Power through its inspection forms, and Appalachian Power sends a confirmation once the inspection is received. You do not have to chase paperwork between the inspector and the utility.

We handle two kinds of utility inspections:

  • Service inspections, $200. New and upgraded overhead and underground electrical services.
  • Residential solar PV inspections, $400. Distributed energy resource (DER) inspections for residential solar systems, including roof mount systems.

Service inspections for electrical contractors

If you just set a new meter base, upgraded a service or ran a new underground service, the job needs an inspection before Appalachian Power will hook it up. We check the work against the code and the utility's service requirements, file the result, and get out of your way so you can move to the next job.

Contractors often tell us other inspectors are booking several weeks out. That is a long time to leave a customer waiting on power. Most of our inspections happen the same day, and if not, within 1 to 2 days.

To book a service inspection, use our online booking and choose Inspection. Have your work order number and the Appalachian Power customer name and phone number ready.

Residential solar PV inspections for installers

Solar installers need two things before a residential system can be energized: an approved DER inspection on file with Appalachian Power and a signed Certificate of Completion. We do both.

During a solar inspection we check the items the utility asks about, including:

  • A lockable, visible break disconnect
  • Whether the DER disconnect is within 10 feet of the service
  • Disconnect labels
  • Whether an energy storage system is installed
  • System size, module rating and quantity, and inverter rating and quantity, matched to the plan set

When the system passes, we sign the 150CSR33 Appendix D, WV Small Generator Facility Certificate of Completion. This is the West Virginia Public Service Commission interconnection form, and it states that the system was installed and inspected in compliance with the local building and electrical code.

To request a solar inspection, fill out our solar PV inspection request form. Attach your system documentation and equipment specs, and we will reach out to schedule.

New contractors: text photos first

If you have not worked with us before, text photos of the job to 681-322-3294. We invoice the inspection fee, and if the photos look like a pass, we schedule the inspection. That saves a trip for both of us when something still needs fixing. Our office is staffed full time, so calls and texts get answered.

For homeowners

Most inspections are booked by the electrician or solar installer doing the work, but homeowners are welcome to call. If your contractor is waiting on an inspection before Appalachian Power will restore or connect power, give us a call or text and we will help you get it scheduled.

We also offer two other inspections:

  • WV Cosmetology Board electrical inspection, $200. For salons and shops that need an electrical inspection for the board.
  • Whole-home electrical walkthrough, $250. A Master Electrician walks your home and tells you plainly what needs attention now and what can wait. If the panel is the problem, see our panel upgrades page.

Where we inspect

We inspect throughout Kanawha and Putnam counties, including Charleston, St. Albans, Hurricane, Poca, Sissonville, Elkview and Marmet. We also work in Nitro, Teays Valley and Hurricane.

Licensed and accountable

Atlas Electric holds West Virginia contractor license WV064889, and our work is led by a Master Electrician licensed under M2306001089. Our Licensed Electrical Inspectors handle every utility and solar inspection.
