Life along the Elk River

Elkview, Pinch and Clendenin all grew up along the Elk River and the creeks that feed it. Route 119 and Interstate 79 tie the valley together, and the Crossings Mall off the Elkview exit is where much of the area shops. Elkview and Pinch are unincorporated parts of Kanawha County, and Clendenin is a small town upriver.

The housing is a mix. There are older homes close to the river and the creeks, ranches and split levels from the 1960s and 1970s, and newer houses on the hills above Pinch and along the ridges. Each one comes with its own electrical problems, and we treat them that way.

What the 2016 flood left behind

In June 2016 the Elk River rose about 28 feet and crested at 33.7 feet at Queen Shoals, just above Clendenin. Seven to eight feet of water went through Clendenin, and homes and businesses in the Elkview floodplain were damaged or destroyed. Little Sandy Creek washed out the bridge to the Crossings Mall and stranded nearly 500 people there.

A lot of homes were rewired quickly after that flood, and some were not rewired at all. Wiring, outlets and panels that sat under water can corrode on the inside long after they dry out. If your home took water in 2016 or in any flood since, we will check the panel, the breakers and the circuits that were below the water line. Where it makes sense, we move panels, outlets and equipment higher so the next high water does less damage.

Panels, rewiring and older homes

Older Elk River homes often have fuse boxes or early breaker panels that are full, ungrounded two-prong outlets, and circuits that were added one at a time over decades. We check the service, the panel and the circuits you use most, then tell you plainly what needs attention now and what can wait. When a panel needs replacing we install Eaton or Schneider Electric equipment, pull the permit and schedule the inspection, and you get a written price before any work starts.

Generators for long valley outages

Trees and long rural lines mean outages in the valley can last a while, especially on the hills above Pinch and out toward Clendenin. We install Kohler standby generators that start on their own, and we set up portable generators with an Interlock Kit or a transfer switch so you can safely run the well pump, furnace, fridge and lights. We size the system to what you actually need to keep running.

EV chargers, heat pumps and new loads

If you are adding a Tesla Wall Connector or ChargePoint Home Flex, a heat pump, a hot tub or a shop circuit, we run a load calculation first so the new circuit does not overload the rest of the house. If the service is too small, we will tell you up front and price a panel or service upgrade along with it.

Commercial electrical work

We also work for small businesses, offices, churches and shops in the Elkview, Pinch and Clendenin area. That includes lighting upgrades, new circuits for equipment, emergency and egress lighting, and panel replacements. We use Leviton and Lutron devices and controls where they fit the job.

AEP service and solar PV inspections

Elkview, Pinch and Clendenin are all outside the city limits where we cannot inspect, so we can perform third-party inspections in all three. We offer Appalachian Power service inspections for new and upgraded services ($200) and residential solar PV inspections ($400), which include the WV Small Generator Facility Certificate of Completion. Read more on our electrical inspection page. We do not perform inspections inside the Charleston, St. Albans or Hurricane city limits.

Why Elk River homeowners call us

You can reach us by call or text, not just a voicemail box, and you can book online any time. One crew handles your house from the estimate to the final inspection. Most local shops do wiring or inspections; we do both, so a new service or solar system can be installed and inspected without chasing two companies. Every job is led by a Master Electrician (license M2306001089), and our contractor license is WV064889. We do residential and commercial work, clean up before we leave, and also serve Sissonville, Big Chimney, Charleston and the rest of Kanawha and Putnam counties.
