Electrical Panel and Service Upgrades in the Charleston Area

Your panel decides how much your home or building can safely run at once. When it is full, worn out or too small for what you are adding, everything downstream feels it. Atlas Electric replaces panels and upgrades electrical services for homes and businesses across Charleston and the Kanawha Valley.

Signs your panel needs attention

  • The same breaker trips again and again
  • There are no open spaces left for new circuits
  • You still have a fuse box
  • Lights dim or flicker when large appliances start
  • You see rust, scorch marks or melted insulation, hear buzzing, or smell something burning near the panel
  • You are planning an EV charger, heat pump, hot tub, addition or generator

Burning smells, heat or scorch marks at the panel are not something to wait on. Turn off what you safely can and call us at 681-322-3294.

What a panel upgrade can include

Every job is priced to what your property actually needs. Depending on what we find, the work may include:

  • Replacing an old panel with a new 100, 150 or 200 amp Eaton or Schneider Electric breaker panel
  • Upgrading the service to 200 amps, including the meter base
  • Replacing outdoor main breaker panels
  • Adding a subpanel for a garage, workshop or addition
  • New overhead or underground service for a new building or a full service replacement
  • GFCI, AFCI and dual function breakers where they are required or recommended
  • Grounding and bonding corrections
  • Whole-panel surge protection
  • Clear labeling of every circuit

Not every home needs 200 amps

A 200 amp service is a common upgrade, but it is not automatically the right answer. We look at your current service, the condition of the panel, your HVAC equipment, major appliances and what you plan to add, and we run a load calculation when it matters. Sometimes a new panel at the same size is enough. Sometimes a subpanel or a single dedicated circuit solves the problem. We will tell you which one fits, and why.

Why so many local panels are due

Housing age across the area tells the story. Census figures put the median home at 1957 in Charleston and 1958 in South Charleston, and about one in four Charleston homes was built before 1940. In Cross Lanes the median home is from 1975, so many original panels there are around 50 years old. In Hurricane, where most homes heat with electricity and many were built after 2000, the issue is more often a panel that is simply full. See our pages for Charleston, South Charleston, Cross Lanes and Hurricane for more on what we see in each area.

How the work goes

We start with a look at the existing service entrance, meter, grounding, panel and circuits. You get a written, upfront price before any work begins. We pull the permit and handle the inspection. On the day of the job, power will be off for part of the work. When the meter or service conductors are involved, we coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with the utility. When we finish, every breaker is labeled so you know what it controls.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a 200 amp service?

Not always. It depends on your current service, your appliances and HVAC, and what you plan to add. We look at the whole picture and run a load calculation when needed before recommending a size.

Can you replace a fuse box?

Yes. We replace fuse boxes with modern breaker panels sized for the home.

Do you coordinate with the power company?

Yes. When the meter base or service conductors are part of the work, we coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with the utility.

Do you pull the permit?

Yes. Atlas Electric pulls the permit for your panel or service upgrade and handles the inspection.

Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger or generator?

Sometimes. Many homes have room, but a full or undersized panel may need an upgrade first. We check capacity before adding either one.

Do you do panel upgrades for businesses?

Yes. We handle panel and service work for both residential and commercial properties.
